Launched in 1994, the MTN Group Limited (MTN Group) is a multinational telecommunications group offering cellular network access and business solutions. It has mobile licences across 21 countries in Africa and the Middle East and as at the end of December 2009, recorded more than 116 million subscribers. The MTN Group is listed on the JSE Limited.
The MTN Group operates in: Botswana, Cameroon, Côte d’Ivoire, Nigeria, Republic of Congo (Congo-Brazzaville), Rwanda, South Africa, Swaziland, Uganda, Zambia, Iran, Afghanistan, Benin, Cyprus, Ghana, Guinea Bissau, Guinea Republic, Liberia, Sudan, Syria and Yemen.
The MTN Group, founded in 1994, is the largest mobile operator in Africa by subscriber numbers. It is a provider of network information technology services across 20 countries across Africa and the Middle East. It is currently withdrawing from the latter region and selling off non-core businesses to focus on Africa. It has the biggest market share in more than half of the countries in which it has a presence and strong growth out of West Africa, in particular.
